What Is AMC for Energy Meters - What's Included, What's Not

AMC vs CMC: What's the Difference?

AMC (Annual Maintenance Contract) is the umbrella term for any year-on-year maintenance agreement. Within AMC, providers typically offer two tiers — and PES uses a specific term for the fuller tier: CMC (Comprehensive Maintenance Contract).

A standard AMC covers routine inspection and service visits, but spare parts or meter replacement are usually billed separately. A CMC bundles parts, labour, calibration and replacement into one fixed annual cost, so a housing society's management committee has no surprise line items during the year.

When evaluating a vendor's AMC proposal, the single most important question to ask is: which tier am I signing, and what exactly is excluded?

What a Good AMC Covers

A comprehensive AMC should include: periodic calibration checks, physical inspection of meter enclosures and seals, firmware updates for smart meters, response to meter faults within an agreed SLA, replacement of faulty meters, and communication system maintenance for IoT-connected installations.

What Is Typically Excluded

Most AMCs exclude: vandalism damage, complete system replacement due to physical damage, model upgrades, civil work to access enclosures, and billing software support. Check explicitly whether replacement meters are included or billed extra.

AMC Takeover

AMC takeover means a new provider taking over maintenance of a system they did not install. A reputable provider will conduct a baseline audit first. PES has provided AMC - including takeovers - for more than 10 years. Contact sales@pesonline.co.in for a detailed AMC proposal.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between AMC and CMC for smart meters?

AMC is the general term for any annual maintenance agreement. CMC (Comprehensive Maintenance Contract) is a fuller tier of AMC that includes meter replacement, parts and labour in one fixed price — so your society isn't billed extra when a meter needs replacing.

Does our AMC cover meter replacement if a unit fails?

Only under a Comprehensive AMC (CMC). A standard AMC typically covers inspection, calibration and repair labour, but bills replacement parts separately. Always confirm this in writing before signing.

Can a vendor take over AMC for meters another vendor installed?

Yes, and PES has handled AMC takeovers — including for third-party meters — for more than 10 years. A reputable vendor runs a baseline audit first, then brings the existing meters under full service coverage without requiring replacement.

Does the AMC cover the resident mobile app and society dashboard?

It should. Software platform uptime, the resident recharge app, and the society management dashboard are typically included as part of the AMC, separate from meter hardware coverage. Confirm this is explicitly stated in your proposal.

How is dual-source (grid + DG) metering covered under AMC?

Dual-source meters have two measurement channels, and AMC coverage should explicitly include both — not just the grid-side channel. Some basic AMCs only cover single-source meters, so confirm this with your vendor before signing.

How long should we expect an AMC vendor to support us?

A vendor's track record is one of the best indicators of how reliable their long-term support will be. PES has maintained energy meter installations for more than 10 years, including comprehensive contracts signed back in 2012 that are still active today.
