Prepaid vs Postpaid Energy Metering - A Buyer's Guide for Housing Societies

How Postpaid Metering Works

In a postpaid model, residents consume electricity and receive a bill at cycle end. Problems are familiar: defaulters, billing disputes, awkward disconnection decisions requiring committee approval.

How Prepaid Metering Works

Residents load credit before consuming. The meter decrements the balance as they consume. When balance approaches zero, the resident gets an alert. At zero, the meter disconnects automatically. No bill to dispute. No collection to chase.

The Case for Prepaid

For most Indian housing societies, prepaid is the stronger model. It eliminates the defaulter problem entirely, eliminates billing disputes, and improves facility team cash flow - payment received before delivering electricity.

Can You Run Both?

Yes. PES meters support both modes, configurable from the Society Management Dashboard. Many societies run prepaid for residential units and postpaid for commercial spaces. Contact sales@pesonline.co.in to discuss what fits your society.
